Everyone is now a critic, but actually what makes criticism readable, compelling, or worthwhile? Can criticism fruitfully intervene in art or politics? If you’ve asked yourself these questions and are interested in starting or continuing a critical writing practice, this class is for you. The purpose of this class is twofold: first, to act as a workshop where participants can refine their critical writing practices within a community of writers and second, to explore philosophical questions around critique’s relationship to power in a context where there is increasing doubt in the value of any individual human judgment. Cultural objects such as music, films, and television are ranked and recommended algorithmically; reviews are summarized en masse by AI and quantified. Everywhere our opinions are solicited, and everywhere those opinions are digested in a way that makes reading them unnecessary. And yet, many of us still do write and seek critical perspectives to shape our understanding of the world. Communities of writers and readers not only persist, but are proliferating. The class integrates close reading and discussion with sustained attention to the practice of writing. We will pay particular attention to questions of form and address: how brevity sharpens thought, how style produces authority or intimacy, and how criticism negotiates its relationship to different audiences, institutions, and to power. Workshops will focus on revision as a critical tool, helping writers refine claims and sharpen their language. Ultimately, this course treats critical writing as a way of participating in a public conversation: a practice that not only evaluates cultural objects but also articulates values and creates communities of readers. By studying important critical traditions while actively producing new work, students will leave the class with a sharper sense of why criticism matters now—and how to write it with purpose, rigor, and style. We will read historical and contemporary sources including Eliza Haywood, 18th century writer and publisher of the first feminist periodical, Victorian journalist and critic Oscar Wilde, autofiction essayist Chris Kraus, theory blogger Mark Fisher, and essayist Hanif Abdurraquib. Each participant will be expected to produce a final, brief piece of polished criticism. At the end of the class, the pieces will be compiled into a zine. This class is open to anyone interested in criticism, but all participants should be prepared to read, write, and revise to produce short critical pieces. Every other week, we will meet and discuss one or two participants’ work in great depth, highlighting existing strengths while suggesting avenues for future development. Although this traditional workshop format is the main focus of the class, we will also seek to develop the skill of transformative editing, a practice which can help you arrive at the strongest possible version of your book. While line-by-line copyediting can perfect a final draft, transformative editing strips your manuscript down to its foundations and rebuilds it. Transformative editing demands a full reassessment of your project, not only at the micro level of diction, references, or imagery, but also its conceptual scaffolding. About two thirds of our two-hour class periods will consist of workshopping time and one third will be spent on transformative editing exercises that will keep you engaged with the form and structure of your manuscript throughout the class even when you’re not actively being workshopped. Toward the end of the class, we will discuss various aspects of publishing, including how to gauge when your manuscript is ready to send out to presses, how to find a good home for your work, and self-publishing. This course extends the work of my previous course, “Developing Your Manuscript from Seed to Flower,” which was designed for writers just starting their books. Participants do not need to have taken my previous class, but either way, you should be at least halfway through a manuscript to take this course. What’s more, living in a media-saturated culture means that images are one of the primary ways many of us interface with reality each day. This course argues that knowing how to write creatively and critically about images is an urgent skill for contemporary poets. Ekphrasis, or poetry inspired by visual art, has a rich tradition in literature. For example, writing about painting was central to the New York School poets. While historical examples of ekphrasis will be a point of departure for us, this course ultimately seeks ways to write about contemporary historical experience in and through images. This entails going beyond a uni-directional model where poets are inspired by a work of art to one where poetry registers how images are woven into the very fabric of reality, and thought itself. Starting from the question of what close visual description can bring to poetry, we will spiral out towards a broader focus on vision as generative practice for writing, including but not limited to: writing in and through images, incorporating images into your work, and making imagistic and/or graphic poetry. Whether you’re a poet interested in writing through visual art or a visual artist interested in writing poetry, this class models several approaches to creation. Through readings in key media theory texts about the language-image relationship and poetic works by Theresa Cha, Tisa Bryant, Karl Larsson, Barbara Guest, and many others, we will investigate the myriad possibilities offered to us in the space between language and image. While some writers are lucky to be that prolific, for many of us the reality of writing a book--from the very first stirrings of an idea to completing an edited manuscript--is a lot messier. While there is no one way to write a book, this class traces potential roadmaps for writing, organizing, and editing your manuscript. Simultaneously, we will reflect on how writing a book is a durational process bound up with life’s changes, learning when to keep pushing, how to sustain the energy of a project when life becomes overwhelming, and when taking a break might be fruitful. Where a traditional manuscript workshop looks at largely completed drafts, this class provides people who are early on in their manuscript journey a space to experiment, plan, and research towards their long-form manuscript. It also provides people a space to process the experience of writing itself and how it intersects with the content of our writing. The goal is to leave the class with a sense of what book you want to write, its general shape, and a flexible plan for how to complete it. In addition to reading a few long-form projects that represent major approaches to assembling a manuscript in contemporary American poetry–the lyric collection, documentary poetics, and narrative poetry, we will also read Art and Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orlando, a short book that question what keeps us from completing our creative goals. Our work during the class will include a mix of workshopping existing pieces to identify key points of future development for your project and assignments aimed at helping you write and plan future parts of your manuscript.
